The Game Awards - 2025
The Game Awards happened and Clair Obscur won a bunch. Shocking! Below are (most) of the game announcements, some of the awards, and my snark.
- The Free Shepherd - Dog herding adventure game?
- Decrepit - First person horror souls-like
- Audio Mech - Game where you fight against your own music
- Pragmata - I feel like this has been at every game show for the last year, Capcom must think it has some real legs.
- There’s a demo out today
- Solasta II - Sequel CRPG
- Tankrat - Vehicle combat with upgradeable cars.
- Indie GotY - Wow, it Clair Obscur won, I’m so shocked! /s
- Not to imply they don’t deserve it
- Bradley the Badger - 3D platformer with puzzle elements
- This might not be for me, but it looks very good.
- Stupid Never Dies - Action game in the same vein as Devil May Cry, but anime
- It also had a very unpleasant song to announce it. Felt very “how do you do, fellow kids”
- Best Adaptation - The Last of Us Part 2
- I haven’t watched it, I have no thoughts
- Best Action Game - Hades 2
- Deserved, honestly. It’s cool to see Supergiant get their flowers for their first ever sequel.
- Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic
- I lost my fucking mind at this one. Kotor I and II are core games for me and to be going back to that time period. And the original director of KotOR is directing it???
- The Capcom ad with Bawk, Max, and Suzi was great
- So far the ads this year are a lot more appealing than previous years. Toxic Commands, Soulframe, actually games I might want to play instead of 8 more gacha f2p anime games.
- Divinity - This is what the obelisk was about, it’s called The Hellstone. This is Larian’s next game, though they’ve said they aren’t making an Original Sin 3, so this is a different game in the same universe? (or they lied)
- Best Performance - Jennifer English, Clair Obscur
- Troy Baker should have won for Indiana Jones, IMO. Taking such an iconic character and playing him so well, without feeling like you were just trying to emulate what was already there is such an impressive feat and he pulled it off well.
- I love Jennifer English’s work, for the record, I just think Troy Baker was amazing.
- 4Loop - From JJ Abrams and Mike Booth (Lead Designer on Left 4 Dead), co-op shooter of some kind, gave extraction vibes.
- Do we really need another one at this point? I’ll be happy to be proven wrong, I guess.
- Coven of the Chicken Foot - Cute 3D puzzle platformer adventure game thing where you play as a grandma on an adventure with some kind of creature.
- From a new (I think) Sony studio
- ONTOS - First person adventure-horror from the creators of SOMA. Might be a walking sim?
- I spoke too soon about the ads, ZZZ and 2XKO were in the next block lol
- Games for Impact - South of Midnight
- I literally played none of these games.
- Resident Evil Requiem - Some story info and the Leon reveal
- The crowd really liked this one
- Order of the Sinking Stars - Isometric puzzle game with interconnected levels and different characters
- From the creator of Braid and The Witness
- Exodus - Sci-Fi third person shooter from Wizards of the Coast. The gameplay reminds me a bit of Remnant, the little they showed. The art direction is interesting.
- It’s being developed by Archetype Entertainment, which is an in-house studio at WoC lead by James Ohlen (former creative director at Bioware) who worked on Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, KotOR, Dragon Age: Origins, and SWtOR.
- Warlock (Dungeons & Dragons) - No real gameplay, but there’ll be another reveal summer of 2026.
- More ads. Including a pretty good Game Pass ad. An anime racing game called Screamer. At least it isn’t free to play, I guess.
- Control Resonant - You play as Dylan Faden (I think) and it looks more melee focused. Seriously hype trailer.
- A live Control reveal performance???
- Remedy certainly knows how to hype a guy up.
- Gang of Dragon - Grand Theft Auto Japan??? featuring the Hulk??
- Street Fighter movie promo - I’ve never watched the original, but this looks like it has a lot of the same spirit.
- Crowd liked this
- They brought out the actors to present best ongoing game. It was actually kinda hype.
- Best Ongoing Game - No Man’s Sky
- Actually sick to see them get recognition for the amount of work and content they keep putting out for free
- Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight - New trailer. Lego games aren’t usually my cup of tea, but this looks great.
- Content Creator of the Year - MoistCr1tikal
- I’m surprised he beat out Kai, but nice.
- Most Anticipated Game - Grand Theft Auto VI
- Not mine, but obviously it was going to win. Not that anyone asked, but my list is Witcher IV, Wolverine, 007 First Light, GTA VI, RE: Requiem
- More ads. Marvel fighting game, and a bunch of mobile garbage.
- I know they have to pay the bills, but I don’t have to like it.
- Game Changer Award - Girls Make Games
- Tomb Raider: Catalyst - This looks so, so over the top. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but it’s also not coming out til 2027
- Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis - Remake of the original for the 30th anniversary
- I really did not like the cinematography(?) of this trailer. It was so jumpy.
- Forest 3 - Sci-Fi survival-horror on a creepy planet after your ship crashed.
- Like, The Forest? Huh?
- Invicible VS
- Orbitals - Switch 2 exclusive. Splitscreen adventure game, I think?
- Kepler has a ton of games in this showcase.
- Best Action/Adventure Game - Silksong
- lol
- Best Art Direction - Clair Obscur
- lol
- Best Sim/Strategy Game - FF Tactics
- I was rooting for The Alters
- Best Debut Indie Game - Clair Obscur
- l o l
- I don’t know why I’m telling you about all the ads. This is the second (third?) Amazon Luna ad.
- I don’t want to mistakenly accuse someone of making AI slop, but wow Aniimo does not look good.
- Diablo IV expansion - They always have good trailers
- Marvel Rivals - Deadpool announcement.
- 007 First Light - It sure looks like Hitman lol
- Best Score and Music - Clair Obscur
- lmao
- I know I’m taking the piss every time they win, but I really am happy for the creators. I’m glad they’re getting the recognition for what is obviously an impactful and lovingly made game.
- Warframe - Just another ad, I guess?
- Oh, it kicked off the ad block lol
- Lords of the Fallen 2 - Yep, it’s another souls-like
- Best RPG - Clair Obscur
- Players’ Voice - Wuthering Waves
- lol
- Saros - New story trailer. Returnal but different. It has such a sick design.
- Best Narrative - Clair Obscur
- I had Clair Obscur typed before they read the list and I was right.
- No Law - Dystopian cyberpunk first person action game. This looks sick as hell.
- Best Multiplayer - Arc Raiders
- This was the calmest acceptance speech I’ve ever seen.
- Total War: Warhammer 40k
- Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve
- Star Wars Galactic Racer - I can honestly say I never expected a podracing game but it looks dope.
- Out of Words - Claymation co-op game, looks cute.
- When Geoff said a dear friend, I honestly thought it was going to be Kojima again, but it was Miss Piggy, I forgot she was there.
- Phantom Blade 0 - 3rd person action game, Black Myth vibes
- Best Game Direction - Clair Obscur
- Will it be Clair Obscur again? I bet it will be!
- It was
- Megaman Dual Override - I do not like the look of it.
- Live orchestra for this announcement.
- Highguard - A sci-fi western shooter from former Titanfall and Apex Legends devs
- I have literally zero interest in team shooters but this looks neat. Hopefully it has legs, because it’s already a really saturated genre.
- It’s free to play, so that’ll help.
- Game of the Year - Clair Obscur
- Who could it be, do you think it’ll be the game that’s won like 6 awards already tonight?
- I’m shocked! Shocked! Well… not that shocked.
- Zack
