So What is Backlogging..?
I wanted to write something up talking about my my philosophy for what games I’m going to play going forward.
For some background, I used to buy pretty much every new game that interested me right when it came out, and I’d play it on release. I wouldn’t ever go back and play any DLC, or achievement hunt, once I beat the game I usually never picked it back up.
After Callisto Protocol last year I decided I needed to take a new approach to deciding what games I play and here are my criteria:
The Backlog
Games from my (extensive) backlog should be prioritized. I’m not limiting myself to them exclusively, but I’m trying to play around 5 backlog games before introducing anything new.
New Games
In addition to prioritizing games I already own, I’m setting some restrictions to when I buy games.
- Only games that are older than 1 year.
- Only when they have a 50%+ discount.
- Not in Early Access.
Exceptions
- I back a decent amount of games on Kickstarter. I won’t play them until they’re in 1.0, but the purchase obviously happens outside my restrictions.
- I like to buy collector’s editions, and these are usually limited supply, so they have to be bought at announcement, or not at all. I’m usually in it for the actual collector’s edition, but I (sometimes) get the game too.
- Whatever I want. I’m a human, and I’m not immune to hype; I may want to play a recently released game from time to time, but it will never be purchased on release; I’ll always be waiting for reviews.
